ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of coalition partners today on the country’s political situation and the Jamat-e-Islami’s negotiation efforts between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), sources told Geo News.

The meeting will be held today at 3:30pm at the PM House, the sources said, adding the huddle will hold consultations on the prevailing political and constitutional crises and take decisions in this regard.

The sources shared that the prime minister will consult with the allied parties after the meeting with JI chief Sirajul Haq — who has offered to hold an all-parties conference after Eid ul Fitr to end the impasse between the government and Imran Khan-led PTI.

The issue of the Supreme Court’s order to release Rs21 billion for elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also come under discussion.

The State Bank of Pakistan was directed by the apex court to release funds directly to the Election Commission of Pakistan by April 17 and submit a report in this regard on April 18 (today).

However, the National Assembly has once again rejected the motion to grant permission to the central bank to release funds.

PPP delegation meets coalition partners

Meanwhile, a three-member delegation of the Pakistan Peoples Party held separate meetings with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).

During the meeting with PML-N leaders, Senator Yousuf Raza Gilani said the situation is tense and the collision between the institutions is not in the country’s interest.

Speaking on the occasion, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the politics of stubbornness and selfishness has led the country to crisis, and it is the responsibility of the political parties to improve the situation through dialogue.

‘Dialogue better for Constitution, democracy’

Talking to the media persons here in Islamabad after the meeting with ANP leaders, former PM Gilani said they are holding talks on the instructions of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and former president Asif Ali Zardari.

He said the ANP always rendered sacrifices for the restoration of democracy and rule of law. Gilani said the basic purpose of the Constitution was that all institutions would exercise their powers within their constitutional domain.

“The PPP wants to make a conducive environment for dialogue among the political parties, as all the problems being faced by the county will be addressed through the dialogue process,” he added.

Gilani said the masses were looking to the political parties in the current political and economic situation.

He said there was no concept of economic stability sans political equilibrium in the country and therefore it was the best strategy to hold dialogue with the political parties especially those who were allies of the government.

ANP Secretary General Mian Iftikhar Hussain thanked the PPP delegation for approaching them for dialogue.

He said the political parties will have to join hands for the supremacy of the parliament and to ensure that all institutions work in their domain.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), expressed doubts on Wednesday over the viability of the Shehbaz Sharif administration, stating that he believes the new system will fail if citizens go to the streets.

Fazlur Rehman stated on Wednesday’s “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath” segment of Geo News that “the parliament will likely be a rubber stamp.” There are simply too many obstacles for this government to handle. In the end, politicians will be held accountable for all of their shortcomings.”

The “crime is committed by someone else and the politicians take responsibility,” he said, calling it bizarre. The leader of JUI-F declared that his organization will demonstrate against the establishments that had turned the elections into a “game.”

Fazl has previously said that he would abstain from the by-elections for the National Assembly and provincial assembly seats. In addition, he declared that on April 25, following Ramadan, he will start a protest campaign against the purported election manipulation from Balochistan.

“We firmly believe that there will be a rigged general election in 2024. And the factor that changed the outcome would be our aim. We reject the findings that led to the formation of this government,” he declared.

The leader of JUI-F stated that they disagreed with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa election results.

“[Earlier] the issues with the PTI were ideological and not election-related,” he said.

He stated that the party had not yet made the decision to work with the PTI. He did concede, though, that the Imran Khan-led party’s attitude has changed for the better. He remarked that it was a positive attitude and that it would not be a problem if the two parties moved together.

Fazl also revealed that he told Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, that he thought of him as a new blue-eyed boy during their meeting.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the founder of the PTI will be presenting their appeals against their conviction in the cipher case to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday.

Due to its inability to hold a hearing on Tuesday, a division bench led by Chief Justice Amir Farooq and comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb will take up the appeals.

The court has requested information from the jail administration regarding the visits of those lawyers to Adiala Jail and from the Islamabad Advocate General regarding the appointment of state attorneys.

Both Qureshi and the founder of the PTI have contested their convictions and 10-year sentences in this case.

The appellant and co-accused Qureshi were prosecuted under Sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, in conjunction with Section 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), 1860, according to the PTI founder’s attorney. The appellant, who was taken into custody on August 15, 2023, feels wronged by the judgment and punishment handed out by Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, Special Judge (Official Secrets Act, 1923), Islamabad, on January 30, 2024.

He argued that the trial court did not step in to address the appellant’s repeated concerns and that the prosecution had incorrectly documented evidence in breach of the mandatory provisions stated in the Criminal Procedure Code 1898.
