Reham Khan takes a go at PML-N after humiliating defeat in Punjab by-polls

Reham Khan, the ex-wife of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, had a go at the PML-N on Twitter after the party major defeat in the Punjab by-polls, saying that the party might have been “cursed”.

“I’ve heard that Pervez Elahi imprecated curses on the PML-N,” Reham, who is a former journalist, quipped in a tweet after PTI bagged 15 out of the 20 constituencies up for grabs in the Punjab by-polls a day earlier.

The clear victory of PTI in the Punjab by-polls has turned around the number game in the Punjab Assembly, with Chaudhry Pervez Elahi now most likely to replace Hamza Shahbaz Sharif as the new chief minister of the province in the coming days.

Almost all the politicians who joined the PML-N and voted for Hamza Shahbaz Sharif lost to the PTI candidates.

Reham also said that the PML-N should determine whose fault the defeat was, simultaneously sharing that she thought the leadership is to blame.

“Is PML-N going to continue to follow their political gurus on media? Will they now see sense? I for one will not be holding my breath. Rank and file in PML-N assigned to find who messed it up […] errr I think it’s the leadership.”

PML-N won four seats and the remaining one seat went to an independent candidate, apart from PTI’s 15 seats.

Before the by-polls, the PTI and PML-Q had already jointly attained the strength of 173 (163 of PTI and 10 of PML-Q).

Now, with 15 additional seats, this strength has reached 188 whereas the figure for the simple majority stands at 186. This means the PTI and PML-Q have crossed that landmark.

One independent MPA will likely be part of the new ruling coalition.

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman of Jamaat Islami was proclaimed the winner of the election in the Karachi constituency; however, he stated in the open that he had lost in PS-129.

The PS-129 results were not announced by the election commission.

Saif Bari, a candidate supported by the PTI, has begged the court to announce the results of the PS-129 poll.

According to Form 45, the attorney informed the court that Saif Bari, his client, had been declared the winner of the constituency.

The lawyer added that Hafiz Naeem has openly acknowledged that he lost the constituency. The attorney stated, “Until the notification of the result not being issued, we could not go to the election tribunal.”

The attorney begged the court to direct the electoral commission to notify PS-129’s victorious candidate.

The Election Commission, the Attorney General, and the Deputy Attorney General have all received notices from the court in this case, and the parties have been given until April 9 to respond.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the founder of the PTI will be presenting their appeals against their conviction in the cipher case to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday.

Due to its inability to hold a hearing on Tuesday, a division bench led by Chief Justice Amir Farooq and comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb will take up the appeals.

The court has requested information from the jail administration regarding the visits of those lawyers to Adiala Jail and from the Islamabad Advocate General regarding the appointment of state attorneys.

Both Qureshi and the founder of the PTI have contested their convictions and 10-year sentences in this case.

The appellant and co-accused Qureshi were prosecuted under Sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, in conjunction with Section 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), 1860, according to the PTI founder’s attorney. The appellant, who was taken into custody on August 15, 2023, feels wronged by the judgment and punishment handed out by Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, Special Judge (Official Secrets Act, 1923), Islamabad, on January 30, 2024.

He argued that the trial court did not step in to address the appellant’s repeated concerns and that the prosecution had incorrectly documented evidence in breach of the mandatory provisions stated in the Criminal Procedure Code 1898.
